"spectacular staging" - MARK SHENTON, LONDON THEATRE

"Morgan Large (who has been carving out a name for himself over the past few years in a succession of wonderfully accomplished projects that started small and have rapidly got larger and larger) is here employed to employ his visual genius on the gargantuan stage of the Palladium.  He does so with an intellectual rigour, panache and sense of fun that stimulates all levels of your mind and senses, while remaining – even at its most opulent – as simple and innocent as possible." - BRITISHTHEATRE.COM

"The design sort of builds from nothing; at the start it’s a couple of sheets hung up by the corners to look like sand dunes. By the interval, we’ve got 10ft tall, gold-plated, guitar-playing sphinxes – the power of the children’s imagination" - THE STAGE

"Large treats the stage like a playground for the biggest game of dress-up in the world. And obviously there are the costumes – especially a gorgeously intricate dreamcoat" - THE STAGE

Always-reliable Morgan Large does great work yet again and gives us an inventive set which is cleverly used - The Reviews Hub

Morgan’s Large’s hugely effective set comprises an enclosed boxed stage with fragmented, mirrored panels and frosted glass divides to echo the fractured elements of the story and highlight the increasing claustrophobia of Evan’s situation as the net begins to close in - the Arts Shelf

Performed in a boxed-out stage, the sides and ceiling are lined with mirrors that nobody stops to observe themselves in. Morgan Large’s design instead forces us to see different fragments of the families played out in front of us – fractured parts of the Murphy’s as they process grief and regrets, glimpses of a distracted, busy mum simply trying her best, and a solo Evan, as his self-gain agenda becomes his undoing. Sliding glass windows, grubbily marked to make them blur, shut off an idyllic representation of the outside world - whatsonstage

THIS first UK tour of Dear Evan Hansen not only recaptures all the visual impact and style of its Broadway and West End predecessors, but actually seems to rival them - Liverpool Echo

"Set designer Morgan Large meticulously designed the film sets of the Paramount lot, mixing in some beautiful costumes reminiscent of this era in Hollywood” The AU Review

“Morgan Large’s set and costumes look fabulous at the intimate Princess Theatre. Norma wears a series of glittering, draping gowns and kaftans that always catch the eye, while the rest of the cast evoke 1949 Los Angeles in pretty dresses, high-waisted trousers and snappy hats.” - Limelight

SISTER ACT

It ends up as a wildfire trip through a kaleidoscopic Philadelphia (none of the dreary greys of the original film) on designer's Morgan Large's glittery menagerie of set pieces. Particular kudos goes to the slick transition from convent to hell-themed dive bar. Large also makes the most of the occasional chance to go beyond a stage full of dull habits, with Rowe's two rapid-fire costume changes providing delight to audiences during "I Could Be That Guy".

WHATSONSTAGE

It’s great work all round from set and costume designer Morgan Large

TIME OUT

Expertly directed by Bill Buckhurst, with fabulous costume and set design by Morgan Large, this Sister Act is the ultimate production of the show.

★★★★★

WEST END WILMA

Much of the success of the gags depends on the speed of execution so Morgan Large’s adaptable set is a real asset. The set switches from a decaying gothic church to a seedy bar or full-on disco within seconds and all are completely convincing. The eye-popping costumes, also designed by Large, contribute to the brightly exaggerated mood of the show. - BRITISH THEATRE GUIDE

Morgan Large as set and costume designer deserves more than a special mention. The way the set effortlessly turned from nightclub to police station to convent was absolutely spectacular. The costumes at the end were simply fantastic. -  NORTHWESTEND

The show’s design has a remarkable attention-to-detail. A lot of time and money has gone into making this production a sparkling spectacle. - THE MANCUNIAN

★★★★★ WHATSONSTAGE

"Morgan Large's thrust stage designs, replete with gangways, huge hanging glass windows and more scaffolding than a West Side balcony scene, conjure up a jungle-gym auditorium that is enthralling and immersive"

★★★★★ ALL THAT DAZZLES

The set design by Morgan Large is breathtakingly stunning. Vast and meticulous in its detail, it is the kind of set that makes you gasp the moment you set foot inside the venue. The sheer scale of it and the care and attention that has gone into it is like nothing I have ever seen before, and the fact it still manages to convey an intimate story while displaying some of the grandest staging choices is a testament to the sheer brilliance of it. A case of one of the greatest feats in set design I have ever seen, if not THE greatest

The Troubadour becomes set designer Morgan Large’s creative playground and we are OBSESSED with the end product. It heightens the production and is a delight to see.
